Hi there,

I have a machine that has problems accessing the 'net through Windows. I
uninstalled the old Norton Internet Security to install e-Care from the ISP,
so that didn't work so I took that out, too.

Now I can ping anywhere in the world, but I can't use Internet Explorer,
MSN, nor Outlook Express.

The ISP techie told me that there were ports blocked and that was the
problem.

How can I unblock the necessary ports through Windows?

The firewall is OFF, I've done a "netsh winsock reset" to no avail. But I
can ping the outside world. Nothing wrong with the router as the laptop is
going through okay.

What do I do to open up the right ports?

Thanks,

Gordon

Normally you don't have to open ports to access the Internet. If you can
ping, you aren't blocked. It is more likely that your DNS is incorrect
and/or you have malware on that machine.

Look at the DNS settings on the sick machine and compare them to those
on the laptop.

Make sure the computer is clean:

Sounds like it could be a DNS problem?

For example, what if you type try to visit http://83.217.169.55 in a browser
window.

do you reach the webpage? (nothing here)

Maybe I am incorrect, but I wouldn't imagine that you've got "ports
blocked" as the ISP told you. I've had exactly the same problem before
where I was able to successfully ping any address or location, but
couldn't get IE or OE to resolve an address to save my life. Since
your laptop works fine, make sure your Internet Options are configured
correctly. I'd suggest running the Internet Connection Setup a few
times until you get the correct settings. The reason I doubt the ports
are blocked is because IE uses 80, MSN [Messenger] uses 569, and
Outlook Express uses 25 for incoming & 110 for outgoing, by default. I
can almost completely assure you that the Internet Connection Setup
just needs to catch the right combination of settings.
