We are currently looking around for a good c# based portal/cms. Are there
any good open source solutions out there?

There's a portal called .NET nuke that's fairly spread.

In addition to Dot Net Nuke, there's Rainbow (www.rainbowportal.net)

Also, if you have Windows Server 2003, you can download Sharepoint for free,
which gives you excellent, completely extendable document management and
portal capabilities. Very extensible. Some of the new features for the new
release of ASP.NET are derived from Sharepoint webparts and compatible with
them.
