Portable USB Flash Drive

My daughter has a problem installing/running her (portable) USB flash hard
drive.

Instructions say driver not required on her WIN 98 system. When she plugs in
device, message reads, "Found new hardware"; however error message then
pops up, "There was a problem installing the hardware. One of the filter
drivers is invalid" What must she do to properly install it

Is she running Windows 98 or Windows 98SE (Second edition) ? Most of the
portable USB devices ( and most USB) need to have Windows 98SE before they
will respond correctly. I am not sure what is meant by the "Filter drivers"
Will have to look around and find that one. New one for me.
