Port used by another device

When I try to use a Canon 340P scanner on my XP machine it indicates the Port
is already in use by another device.
Looking at Printers and Faxes shows that an old HP4L, that has been disposed
of, is still on the system with a status of deleting.
Nothing I can think of to continue the deletion process works.
I presume the incomplete deletion is the reason for being unable to use the
scanner(?).
Any advice on how to get rid of the HP?

Open the deleting printer so you can see the pending print jobs. Delete the
print jobs and the printer will also be deleted.
