I did a port scan of my computer and found some weird stuff running on my
computer.
1. Quote of the day on port 17
2. character generator on port 19

I have ran this scan on multiple XP computers and haven't found the Quote of
the day or the character generator running on any others.
I have Symantec Corp antivirus running that gets updated daily so I'm pretty
confident they aren't virii.
Thanks

Thats spyware and junk, not a virus but pretty close, you
have to get rid of them with some type of spyware cleaner
in the worst case, at best you can uninstall them.

I'm doubting it's spyware. Spyware normally calls home and doesn't listen
for connections. And, even if it did, I'd hope the programmer would be smart
enough not to choose a common port that has the potential of being in use.

Sounds like the OP has installed "Simple TCP/IP Services." Just search for
that on Google, plenty to read.

You can also use netstat to find out what's listening. Just do netstat -o
(that's the letter "oh") and you'll see the PID of the program that's bound
to a port in use. Just look for the PID in task manager.

Your right simple ip was installed which includes quote of the day and
character generator and a few others!
Thanks

Those are from the simple tcp/ip services you installed from the windows
components. If you don't need them, uninstall that and the ports will be closed
from then on.
