Can anyone recommend a program that will log all program attempts to
access specific ports successfully and unsuccessfully, and both in and
out? Very similar to a firewall log, but without the program giving
giving any restrictions itself.

I want to monitor a system for suspicious and constant internet traffic,
even though the system appears to be completely idle. The firewall logs
I have aren't helping, and I don't want to install another freeware
firewall that will only end up halting certain traffic with its default
settings..

TIA.

Maybe this from http://www.protect-me.com/freeware.html
"Active Ports - easy to use tool for Windows NT/2000/XP that enables
you to monitor all open TCP and UDP ports on the local computer.
Active Ports maps ports to the owning application so you can watch
which process has opened which port. It also displays a local and
remote IP address for each connection and allows you to terminate the
owning process. Active Ports can help you to detect trojans and other
malicious programs"
