Port forwarding

Does a stand alone computer that does not have a router connected (
only a Broadband Modem) need to have its port forward, into order to
run a Bitorrent client?

Once in a while I use Azureus, and it requires DHCP, ....or maybe it was
UPNP, to be switched on in the router. e.g. With this particular Azureus
prog. I notice that port 6881 (TCP and UDP) gets automatically added to the
list of allowed ports - in the router. Plus, when downloading / uploading
peer to peer, required ports get opened automatically.
