On every boot an error message appears: "A webserver is already running
on port 80, for best results please stop the server and restart this
application."
Stop what server? How?

Do you have a anti-virus program you can scan your system with? Also, I
would download Adaware 6.0 (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) and install it, then
update the definitions, and run a scan with it.

Also, do you have a firewall installed and use it, or at least use the
inbuilt firewall in XP?

Here is what Port 80 is:

Humor me for a second, wouldya?
Pretend we can't see your system from here and tell us a bit more about your
system, what you are trying to do, what you think _should_ be installed,
etc.

Then we might make a decent go of looking at your problem for you.

Sorry for not giving you the full info .
Win XP Pro, 1Gig Intel, 40 Gig HD, 256 Rambus, NSW 2003, no firewall,
DSL internet service, ran Ad Aware, Virus scan (no virus), can't think
of anything else you might need.
Thank you,
Tommy

Ok,
We can work with that.

When did the problem start?
If you go to control menu, look in the add or remove programs section, and
then check windows components, do you have IIS installed?

You must have a firewall, suggest Zone Alarm, but until you
get that free from www.zonelabs.com turn the XP default
firewall ON.
Zone Alarm allows you to block outbound Internet
connections, something the XP firewall does not do.
See www.blackviper.com for info on what and how to shut down
services in Windows XP.
DSL is always on, your computer could be being used to send
kiddy porn or worse, music sharing (either can get you in
jail).
Get SpyBot S&D free from www.safer-networking.org too.
Press CTRL/ALT/DEL to open the task manager and close
applications that show, look at the services tab and look
for services that can be shutdown (re Blackviper), then open
MSCONFIG and stop any unwanted programs.

A skilled programmer/hacker can hide their programs from
casual view and many anti-virus scanners.

God luck.

Not an error?

Ok, do you have IIS installed? Its listed as a windows component in
add/remove programs, in the control panel.
