Does anybody know why my computer would be trying to talk
to port 1900 on my gateway machine? How would it be
possible to turn it off? Finally what is port 1900?

Thanks

Hi, Paul -

SSDP (Simple Service Discovery Protocol) uses port 1900
to discover upstream Internet gateways. Disabling the
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) service will stop the
chatter - but I don't know if it'll break your network.
It depends on how your network is configured.

If you're on a private network I don't think the traffic
passes through the router but maybe someone who's a bit
more familiar with UPnP can provide more information..

My suggestion? Either disable UPnP or block port 1900
and see if your network breaks. If it doesn't, leave it
blocked - you can always put it back the way it was ;-)

Hope this helps -

This port is used by SSDP (Simple Service Discovery Process) and UPnP
(universal plug and play). To disable, run servies.msc and make sure
the the services entitled SSDP discovery service and universal plug and
play device host are both disabled.

If you are concerned about security and needs something less drastic
than disabling UPnP, you can try the following. Go to the Control Panel->
Add or Remove Programs->Add or Remove Windows Components, and
then removing the check box from Internet Gateway Device Discovery and
Control Client under the Networking Services section. This won't disable
UPnP, but just force it to start on demand if needed for Beacon client,
and not be on by default.

Thanks
