POP3

After a possible virus infection which I believe has now been eliminated, I
am now having a problem regarding my email settings on Outlook Express.
I noticed that I was no longer receiving any mail and on checking my account
settings noticed that the one for Incoming mail(POP3) had changed from
mail.virgin.net to a numeric entry.
If I change this back to the correct entry I can once again receive and read
my mail as normal.
The problem however is that despite saving the change etc , when I reboot
the PC the entry for POP3 has changed once again back to the numeric one.
I have already completed a 'repair' on XP using my PC's recovery disk and
any subsequent virus scan has proved Ok.
I would therefore appreciate anyones help or advice as to how I get the
changes for incoming mail to take effect without changing every time I reboot
the PC.

Disable email scanning on your AV program - don't worry, you will still
be safe!

Create a new Identity.
If it works, import your messages from the old Identity and delete it.

But if the OP has email scanning activated in the AV prog, your advice is
a complete waste of time!

Not using the Main Identity, is a complete waste of time.

In 99.99% of cases the turning of the email address in account settings
to a number (I'm presuming 127.0.0.1) is caused by the email scanning
function of the AV program. Just setting up a new identity will NOT cure
this! The email scanning function of the AV program will do exactly the
same thing on the NEW identity!
The cure is to disable the email scanning function in the AV program.

I have now disabled the automatic email scanning in my virus scanner (Mcafee
VS 2004 v9.0) but this appears to have made little difference to the problem.
I have also deleted then recreated a new account using the same information
which once again has made little difference.
Although I change my POP3 settings for incoming mail to
mail.virgin.net,every time I restart the PC this has changed (you guessed
right) to 127.0.0.1

My guess is that you have some anti-hijacking software that
is seeing the mail.virgin.net as a restricted IP and
changing it to the local IP. Check your hosts file and also
the privacy and security sites in IE.
