When my computer is connected to the internet with no IE
windows open, I get random advertisment pop-ups. I have a
free spyware program, but it doesn't fix my probelm. Is
there a way to manually find the spyware/adware and
delete it?

Greg -

Which Spyware/Adware program are you using? There is no *one* program which
does it all. I run four (actually more) and they all fix different things.
Amongst my "arsenal":

Ad-Aware
CWShredder
Spybot Search and Destroy
PestPatrol
These perform a different function than the previous ones:
SpywareBlaster
SpywareGuard
HijackThis

AVG AV program

All can be found with ease using Google. All are freeware (however,
donations to the Authors are welcomed ) except for PestPatrol. If you
install any of these, you must update them immediately after installation so
as to have the current definitions, etc. *Read the Help Files*. If you
choose to run Spybot S&D, *Only* remove entries displayed in RED. DON"T
remove any green or black entries it may display.

Also, if you are running W98 or W98se (not XP) then go to Add/remove
programs>Windows set-up tab>system tools>details>un-check WinPopup> apply>
OK out.

With HijackThis, seek help with the log created at scan from SpywareInfo
Forums. *Do not remove *ANYTHING* without assistance*. It is a very powerful
program and can render your PC in poor working order if you indiscriminately
start removing things.

Remember; this program is for an entirely different purpose, is for the most
stubborn malware, and is very dangerous if used improperly. You have been
warned.

HTH -

I had the same problem. My anti-virus problem would
identify the problems - but it could not delete them all.
Some I could find and manually delte - but not all. Some
seemed to change their name. (Is that possible?) I
purchased a spy/ad removal program. But nothing got rid
of them all. I finally did a system restore. I went back
to a date that I was sure had no problems. This was the
only way I could get rid of them all. It worked. Good
luck.

Yes, it is possible. Some also will move around and attempt to hide if a
known AV or Cleaner is sent "looking" for them. That is also another reason
why one shouldn't have other windows open during a "cleaning" session.
