Pop-up sites

Hi

I have windows xp installed and I dual boot with linux.
I use Firefox to surf the net.
My connection is a PPPOE connection.
Earlier when I was using this connection named as X001 it was
configured under broadband connection. It was working great. No popup
sites were displayed. Some popups came very rarely.
Due to some problem at the Internet service providers end he has
changed the connection and has configured a netwrok connection in the
dial-up group say Y001.
The speed is good but now there is a problem of this pop-up sites.
When I am connected and just displaying the desktop suddenly 3 to 4
sites open up in IE and
this happens continuously. This is irritating.
This happens in firefox also with the site poping up in the existing
tab

I have tried spybot search and destroy and lavasoft adware to no avail.

What alternatives do i have to block these sites.
I am not on any service pack. Is it essential to havbe XP sp2 installed

Thanks
Ninad

That depends on what kind of pop-up you are getting.

Some pop-ups are browser windows, which might not have the normal
address and tool bars. That type responds to a "Pop-up blocker" browser
add on available from sources like MSN, Yahoo and Google among others.
Some alternative browsers have built in blockers.

Messenger service pop-ups utilize a function that Microsoft provided for
Local Area Network (LAN) announcements like "File server will be shut
off in 5 minutes" or "Top tray in laser printer is empty". Messenger
Service pop-ups are labeled as such in the title bar. This type SHOULD
be blocked by the ISP, a broadband router's firewall settings OR a
software firewall like the one that Windows XP has, but leaves inactive
by default before service pack two is installed. Windows XP service pack
2 has other security enhancements and may be required at some point by
the installers for other Microsoft downloads.

Some application developers supplement their revenue stream by including
program code that periodically calls up advertisements over the
Internet. This software is sometimes called "Ad-Ware" (spelling may
vary). Many people use applications like Spybot Search and destroy or
Lavasoft's Ad-Aware to detect such programs and allow the user to decide
if they should be removed.

You can also block individual domain names by adding them to your Hosts
file (no file extension). There are Domain Name Servers (DNS) that
convert URLS to the Internet Protocol (IP) numbers required for all
Internet communications. The Hosts file overrides the DNS service,
making it possible to make the browser seek the advertisement on your
hard drive, where the page doesn't exist.
