a dos window opens when first logged into a profile then a pop up comes up.
It says "C:\document and settings\all users\ start
menu\programs\startup\microsoft broadband networking.ink
the ntvdm cpu has encountered an illegal instruction"
and it asks if i want to close or ignore. how can i fix this?

Get rid of whatever malware is on your machine.

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

Do the same for whatever anti-spyware applications that you have.

I have ran my antivirus and anti-spyware software and they find nothing. is
there anything else i can try? thanks for the help!

First off. I assume that this...

C:\document and settings\all users\ start
menu\programs\startup\microsoft broadband networking.ink

Is really, this...
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\
microsoft broadband networking.lnk

microsoft broadband networking.lnk being a shortcut to MSBNTray.exe.

MSBNTray.exe is a process belonging to the Microsoft Broadband Networking
Software and offers a traybar helper for this product.

NTVDM.EXE (NT Virtual DOS Machine) is used in conjuction with wow.exe to run
16-bit applications.

I would also assume that MSBNTray.exe is not a 16-bit program.

Never the less, try this.

Run the System File Checker, sfc.exe. Sfc replaces bad files.

Load your XP CD in your CD drive.

Start | Run | Type or paste: sfc /scannow | Click OK

It should take a while to run.
