Help, please, guys:

We have a policy in place for our students in our main library
computer lab. One of the settings prevents them from being able to
open a new window. We set this in Policy Editor (poledit.exe) by
changing the Restrict new and Restrict Open boxes.

The problem is, because of java and other popup windows that some of
our online databases use, we need this ability back, but these
particular setting will _not_ undo! We can unlock our policy and take
_all_ the settings off, but can't get it to unlock just this. Whenever
you try to go to File>New>Window in IE, it tells you that you don't
have permission to do that.

Look in the registry for this key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Restrictions]
"NoOpeninNewWnd"

Delete the key or change the value to zero.

Hey, I just figured out the answer to a problem like yours
that may be related. I was using Poppup stopper, and
uninstalled it, and could not get a poppup to load at all.
Check out http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679 I
think our problem was the same, just caused by different
programs.

Paul,
Jon's got you on the right track .........

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Restrictions]
"NoFileNew"=dword:00000001
"NoFileOpen"=dword:00000001
"NoFindFiles"=dword:00000001
"NoOpeninNewWnd"=dword:00000001

Note: the above applies to the "Current_User", depending on how you
set things up it may also exist in:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Restrictions]

The above Restrictions would apply to *all* users.

Mike & Jon, I'm afraid neither works. I do not have those registry
entries. (This is w2k). Thanks for all the help so far.

Paul,
What entries do exist in either of those locations?
Are you logged on as the Administrator, or one of the "users"?
