Hi, I’m not a IT savvy person and I’ve some problem with my laptop. My laptop
is running on windows xp home edn. Two days ago I did a windows update and it
prompt me of “critical update†to download the Service Pack 2, and so I did.

Since then, I was not able to surf internet although I was receiving
excellent signal from my modem. Also, upon downloading the Service Pack 2, my
antivirus system keeps prompting me message such as:
- conflicts of firewall b/w windows xp & my antivirus firewall
- also, it prompt me that some of the windows system, such as i.explore and
few others that I couldn’t really recall the names, are trying to connect to
internet to get an updates.

Is it because of these updates that my laptop battery running low very fast?

Anyone, PLEASE has any idea what is happening and what can I do to rectify
the problem?

Thank you so much in advanced.

Hello Gina,

Did the service pack install without a problem?
Are you running Norton Internet Security or another 3rd-party security suite? which possibly has its own firewall?

Expand on "not able to surf internet". Does that mean you cannot get to any website at all?

If the 3rd-party security suite has its own firewall, turn off the XP built-in firewall.
From Start menu, go to Control Panel, then select & use Security Center.

You likely need to do some digging in the settings/options of your security program, to allow I.E. browser to access the internet.

Hi Maurice,

Thanks for your reply.

- No problem encountered during installation.
- My current antivirus software does has its own firewall. I've tried to
switch on and off between the antivirus and my xp firewall, but still it
doesn't work.
- Everytime I try to suft, it will always shown: Page cannot be displayed.

Do you have any suggestions/things that I could try on the security settings
part? (considering that I'm very poor in computer).

Thanks

Gina,

I keep trying to have you reply here, with the name/version of your security suite. You likely have to tweak its settings to put microsoft update sites in /it's/ white list (safe sites list).
Also, reply if you have a problem reaching ordinary, plain vanilla websites.

The following are critical sites for Windows Update, please ensure they are trusted.
windowsupdate.microsoft.com
*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
www.download.windowsupdate.com
download.windowsupdate.com

To access the Trusted Sites settings.

1. Open Internet Explorer browser

2. Click Tools / Internet Options

3. Click the Security Tab

4. Click on the Trusted Sites Icon

5. Click on the Sites button

6. Unselect the check box "Require server verification (https:)for all sites in this zone" ( Be sure it is un-ticked / not checked).

7. Add all sites listed above

8. Apply changes.
