Plextools Pro upgrades are free to owners of Plextor burners.
Unfortunately, I wish that this were true. Plextor's software has always
been free to owners of _some_ but not all Plextor models. Plextor made a
cutoff point with the switch to Windows NTFS -- customers who had
previously used their bundled _Plextor Manager_ software in Windows 9x
were not allowed a free upgrade to Plextools. Similiarly, I was left out
in the cold with the imaging utility CD-Rescue, for which I'd paid
Plextor a surcharge; there was no upgrade and that was that. Granted
that in this case, an operating system image of a typical HD had grown
so dramatically that it's probably impractical to do an OS backup on
CDs; for example, Windows 98SE backed up on 1-3 CDRWs; Windows ME
required 9 disks. XP will take many more.
When you first install the Plextools included with your burner, it creates
a registry entry which allows subsequent updates to be installed after
download.
Plextools wasn't included with my burner because my burner slightly
pre-dates NTFS. Plextools is NTFS-specific.
The only payware is Pro XL which the OP did not ask for.
I'm the OP, and that's correct.
I paid a premium price for the Plextor drive, counting on Plextor's
reputation for professional-grade hardware and excellent proprietary
bundled software. There's also a reasonable expectation that when paying
a premium price, one will receive considerate assistance. No upgrade
path has been provided: not free, not $10 upgrade even: it's full-fare $80.
While their support has been above-average in terms of being able to get
them on the phone with calls answered in the USA, I feel abandoned and
badly treated with this Plextools policy. In fact, I need a couple of
burners to go with new computers; since the quality of one or two other
brands has risen, I'll probably abandon Plextor for these purchases
because of this.
