message: the computer can't find the proceuradress
remoteAssistancePrepareSystemRestore in DLL-file
WINSTA.dll
what should I do???????????

Since our expert, Ramesh, is sound asleep in India, I will pass along his
excellent advice to the same problem, given several days ago:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD
2. Click [Start] [Run]
3. Type the following command and press Enter
"rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf"

System Restore core files should be reinstalled.

Alternately, you may also open Windows Explorer, navigate to
"C:\Windows\Inf" folder and right-click sr.inf (choose Install)

try booting from the Windows cd, and clicking R to repair
and run the recovery console. if this does not work, try
downloading that file somewhere? if that doesnt work,
format.

If you lost system restore as a side effect to treating the
msblaster worm, you should run a currently updated antivirus program to make
certain the virus has been completely removed from your setup.

If your system is clean or the above doesn't apply, try turning off System
Restore and turning it back on. Go to Control Panel, open System, go to the
System Restore tab, place a check next to Turn Off System Restore on All
Drives. Note, you will lose all restore points but they are useless to you
at the moment anyway. Reboot the system, return to the above and remove
that check to turn System Restore on. Reboot and see if System Restore now
functions. Make sure to manually create a restore point and then try
restoring your system to it.

If the above fails to give you access to System Restore, try the following:
The following assumes you have an actual XP CD as opposed to a restore CD or
restore partition supplied by your PC manufacturer.

Go to Start, type sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter. Note, there
is a space between sfc and the forward slash. You will be asked for your XP
CD. Be aware, upon inserting the CD the XP setup screen may appear, this is
not a part of sfc /scannow, rather it is being invoked by autorun. Simply
minimize the screen and allow sfc to continue.

If the above fails to resolve the issue, try a repair install as follows:

Be sure you are well backed up in case there is a problem from which you are
unable to recover. NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data
files intact, if something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be
forced to start over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your
data backed up, you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

The solution? Get SP1! I'm guessing the version of winsta.dll you have is
5.1.2600 which doesn't export that function. The newest version,
5.1.2600.1106 does export it. So, no need to do a recovery console or
reinstall XP.

Tim, if he doesn't already have SP1 that is not an advisable solution. SP1
may break functions on his current setup as various applications and
hardware drivers may need to be updated for this purpose. Your response
presupposes he has all the latest updates and that everything he has is
compatible with SP1. You should at least include the advisory to make sure
all drivers and applications are up to date and check applicable hardware
and software sites for compatibility and/or any issues before installing
SP1.

Agreed. However, some of the other solutions are a shotgun approach. You
won't be able to download and replace winsta.dll because file protection
will just replace it. The core issue revolves around winsta.dll. Most
likely, the version he has isn't exporting that function and thus, the error
message. I'm willing to bet the OP can't even right-click "My Computer" and
go to Properties w/out getting that error. Regardless, it's in his best
interest to get SP1 as there are critical updates that are needed.

I just felt it was important to make that point not only for the OP but
anyone else who might be lurking as making that change does come with its
own set of risks. If winsta.dll is corrupt, sfc should be able to replace
it with the uncorrupted pre-sp1 version as would a repair install. But, the
SP1 update as you suggest does include a number of critical updates that
would be in his best interest, he should just go into it with his eyes wide
open.:-)
