Please make the simple task like inserting a horizontal line easy

I have been trying to insert a simple horizontal line and simple short and
long underscore dashes in a document for almost an hour. I have followed the
instructions from help but have not accomplished this task. Why is it so
difficult? I only need the lines to receive responses on and it seems no
matter which format I use drawing, format to borders and shading then
selecting horizontal lines, I get NOTHING. Please tell me where I'm going
wrong?

You are probably in "normal" view. Try switching to Print View.

Check under Tools > Options > View and see if you have the option checked to
view drawing objects. You do not want "placeholders" showing.

Finally, drawing lines for forms is really doing things the hard way. Take a
look at http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/LinesInForms.htm.

Hope this helps,
