"please insert disk into drive X" disk insertion after boot

Hi There, I have a problem with WIN XP. For some time now the only way I can
use CD ROMs/ Audio Cds etc and USB Drives is if I boot up with them. If I
insert them after windows boots the drive is there but I keep getting "please
insert disk into drive X". Can you recommend a fix. I've searched everywhere
and can't find a fix. Please please help....

p.s. Norton 2005 may have been the cause but I'm not sure.

Any event log entries? PNP working?
