I really need help - I haven't a clue what to do.

When the desktop screen comes up (whichever User logs
on makes no difference) an open folder (Yahoo!) is
displayed, just as if I'd opened it, which I haven't.

I have BT Yahoo! as my ISP.

Contents of this folder are all folders bar a notepad
document. They are labelled thus
browser, common, companion, messenger, parental controls,
YUM, and the notepad doc is labelled YCOMMON.
I opened the notepad and this is what I read:

(Connections Status)
Updated = 1096128816
YCS IP0 = -22240446
YCS IP1 = 1265724888
YCS IP2 = -28714430
Test one = -1

I have asked for help on this before, followed the advice
which the MVP said he hoped would help, but no joy. As
suggested, I've come back.

The advice was:
Run regedit and try both HKEYCurrent User & HKEYLocal
Machine as follows:-

Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Run

then find what seems to be the relevant file
right click, select 'modify' and put "" at each end.

The only files I found were in Local Machine, and only
one both mentioned Yahoo and did not already have ""s

Name = Motive SmartBridge
C:\PROGRA~1\BTYAHO~2\SMARTB~1\Motive SB.exe

I put ""s as shown here
"C:\PROGRA~1\BTYAHO~2\SMARTB~1\Motive SB.exe"
closed it all up, then, when back at desktop logged off,
logged back
on again, and the blasted folder is still there, open on
my
desktop!

It appears a moment before the McAfee box saying
McAfee Virus Scan is running and protecting your computer
McAfee Firewall is running and protecting your computer
and so on.

I've also tried the BTYahoo! helpline, they of course
referred me back to Microsoft.

Sorry it's so long-winded, want to be 100% sure every
clue is there. It's not a computer life-threatening
problem, just very irritating. Hope you can help. Erika.

Since the repairs didn't work - and they are the same ones usually done
for when the System32 folder opens on the desktop - troubleshoot by
doing a clean boot:

Clean Boot in Windows XP

Also, since you mentioned McAfee - is this program current (version not
earlier than 2003) and are its definitions up-to-date?

It sound like your yahoo messenger is starting up , it
can do that if its set at start whenever windows starts
up ... You can stop this from happening by changing the
setting in the messenger preferences... Do you use yahoo
messenger ???

I really thought you had it - made a lot of sense cos I'd
downloaded messanger then realised what it was (namely,
not for me) so wondered if I'd done something then. I un-
installed it, PC off - PC back on - open folder still
there, even still listing messenger - so deleted file
messenger PC off PC on - OPEN FOLDER STILL THERE, but
messenger gone. I went back to BT Yahoo help - they
suggest I call technical support - 2 level!

To the un-named person who replied to my first query -
This did start after I had download BT Yahoo Messenger
(decided against it so never followed through and set it
up). Now this may sound daft, (I know NOTHING about
downloading except follow the instructions and keep
clicking next),l but when it downloaded and sent itself
off to what I now know as as the BT Yahoo applications
folder, did it 'open' the folder, pop itself in there,
and, because I didn't follow through, never set
up "close" the folder. Following the instructions from
BTY on how to uninstall it - I uninstalled it use
add/remove program, deleted it's name from the list in
that wretched open folder (which still appeared following
the uninstall) but no joy.
If that garbled nonsense makes any sense to you, here is
my question. Would it fix it if I download it again,
making 100% sure it goes right through to the end.
Don't know how to contact you - hope this reaches you ok.
