My home computer was running slower and then slower.
Upon investigation, we found spyware. I bought Spy
Ferret to remove the spyware. It worked all but one
Common Extension Hijack
Default executable handler
Registry change Trojans
I have purchased a new DSL router from Microsoft and when
I attempt to install, the cd does not write to the hard
drive. I dragged the files to a file on the computer
thinking the problem may be in reading from the cd, but
still could not run the setup.exe on the hard drive for
the router.
I have currently unchecked all in the startup so that I
can run faster, but still can't function properly.
Any suggestions?
I considered formatting the disc and starting over. When
I right click on My Computer and select format, I
eventually get a message that it can't be done. I tried
to format from the command prompt with the same result.
My computer is a Dell with 512 mb ram, 966 mhz and
started with Windows ME that we later upgraded to XP.

The two best spyware killers are free(no need to buy anything):
Run these tools:
spybot -- http://www.safer-networking.org/
ad-aware -- http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

What software is it your trying to install? Usually routers do not have any
install software.

You can't format that way. You have to boot to a win9x floppy boot disk,
fdisk, delete partitions, create new partitions, reboot to floppy, run
format. Or boot to the xp cd, it can format and re-install xp.

You can't format the drive that the OS in installed on from within XP. You
can boot from the XP disk, it has all the tools necessary to partition and
format your hard drive.

.
I'm not positive but I believe that "spy ferret"
installs it's own spyware which defeats its perpose try
sptbot instead
