Matt

My parents moved their pictures into the Program Files
folder, and now whenever they try to open them they get
an error message saying "[filename] not accessible." They
cannot open, move, or copy the pictures. I reproduced the
problem, and it occurs any time you move pictures into
Program Files or a subfolder.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

Thanks,
Matt

Can they change the file attributes, remove the read/only
that is probably there.

You might be able to use a alternate boot OS, perhaps a DOS
floppy (there is a NTFS add-on from www.ntfs.org ) and move
the files to another, unprotected directory. You might
still have some problem, but that would be a place to start.

Thanks for the tips. Here's some more info:

- It is not possible to move or copy the files.
- Read only is not checked.
- I got a 404 on teh ntsf.org page. Is there somewhere
else I can look?

Sorry, try www.ntfs.com
If you use a W98 bootable floppy with the NTFS reader files
also on the disk, the files should be accessible. You can
also boot the XP recovery console and do the same thing, The
C:\Windows directory can be modified since it isn't used to
boot the recovery console. Be careful, you can really screw
things up if done wrong. Suggest you backup all the data
files you want to protect in case you make a mistake.

Does this problem only happen with NTFS?
I couldn't reproduce it with FAT32.

What's going on here?
Dave
