This hp3420 prints images ok but the text is distorted and cut out
into strips. I upgraded the printer drivers but problem persist. I
tried to calibrate but only to discover that the calibration test was
printed with similar problems and incompletely. The test consist in
4-5 patterns, this 3420 only prints pieces of the 3 first series. what
can i do?

Thanks

It sounds like you have an interconnect issue where the cartridge is not
properly making electrical contact with the printer. See the following for
instructions on cleaning similar cartridge contacts. While this is written for
a different model the same methods apply:

Your black cartridge is the one with the problem. If this does not correct the
problem contact your dealer or HP for a replacement.

It may also be a bad ink cartridge (plugged nozzles). You might try
inspecting the die (ink delivery section of the cartridge) to see if there
is a piece of the packing tape or a blob of dried ink. You can use a wet
Q-tip to scrub the ink away if that's the problem. Bob offers another
possibility, I concur it could be that, also.
