Please help me- computer hangs and crashes

Please could I have some advise
My computer kkeps freezing when on the internet. I can click on a link and
the screen just freezes ( very often) and i have to CNTRL ALT DEL to get rid
of it, but often that doesn't even close it. I keep getting the error message
IEXPLORE.EXE failed to shut down. Just now my computer crashed and I got a
blue scrren with something about hardware error, or system overheating. I
have not had this before.
I am not very technically minded but would apprecite any help on offer.

I forgot to add that I have just done a virus scan and adaware check and all
is OK there.!
 
I'm no expert but here are some things you could try.

I would start by going into Internet Explorer Properties, under the Programs
tab and looking at what IE addons have been installed and disabling any if
needed. Also, you may reset your web settings. And/Or delete your cookies,
delete temporary internet files.

I have had some problems before and it was being caused by my Java
program but I never received the blue screen. Just frequent IE hangs
and crashes. So you could check into that?? Up to you...

Before you do this next step, you may be required to have your WindowsXP
CDROM in hand. One thing more you can do is, go to Add/Remove Programs in
the Control Panel and click on the add/remove Windows Components link.
Uninstall Internet Explorer and restart computer, then after the computer
reboots, reinstall it
the same way you uninstalled it, through the Add/Remove Windows Components
program.

Also, you may try upgrading Internet Explorer to a newer version, depending on
what version your using. You can check what version you have by opening
Internet Explorer and clicking HELP on the menu bar and then clicking ABOUT
INTERNET
EXPLORER. It will tell you exactly what version your using. Then check the
Microsoft Internet Explorer website for updates.
