Does anyone know what to do about these things...?

My resident 'AVG' does searches that find them, but it won't shift them; and
other things that I've downloaded for free just don't detect the things in
the first place...!

Does this mean I have to 'reformat my C-drive', like someone once told me I
should...?

As usual, get Ad-Aware from LavaSoft and remove it and protecttion in the
future.

Thanks for this; but I've got Ad-Aware *and* Spybot -- and neither of them
even *detects* the two problems in question...

Any idea why they don't find them, even with the newest upgrades
installed...?

This virus should be removed by your Antivirus program if it's up to date.

Have a look here, but you need a decent anti-virus program if yours
won't remove - such as the programs made by Computer Associates (refer
to URL).

I'd look at trying SpyBot S&D version 1.3 (www.majorgeeks.com).
It's pretty good at removing crap like that.
