Origin of problem: I bought USB flash drive thinking pc was 2.0 capable. PC
was not 2.0 capable (older machine) so I bought and installed 2.0 pci card.
Most 2.0 compliant devices were recognized by PC and automatically shifted to
the higher standard, but the USB flash drive still remained unusable (PC
would give it a drive designation, but would not see stored files on flash
drive and would not allow files to be stored there). I tried uninstalling
flash drive, removing some files from registry per sandisk website, but
nothing worked. NOW MY BIG MISTAKE!

The drivers for the PCI card were installed, then the card was physically
installed, but it did not act as a pnp device... I had to manually associate
the drivers to the card to get it operating. In my infinite wisdom I thought
that maybe if I associated the drivers for the 2.0 pci card to the flash
drive it might somehow get it to operate as a 2.0 device. HUGE MISTAKE!

Now whenever I plug the flash drive in I get the blue screen of death
immediately! It reads that windows is shutting down to save my machine from
damage, yada, yada, yada, and then list this line of text:

Stop: 0x0000007e, (0xc000005, 0xf88ce80d, 0xf8a08774, 0xf8z08470)

I tried using a restore point, and importing a very recent copy of the
registry, but for some reason it states that all of the registry files
couldn't be copied. I know the above text string can help me fix this thing,
but I have no idea what to do with it. If I could just plug the crazy flash
drive in for one minute I could reassign the drivers, but it appears there is
no chance of that because whether I boot with it in, or plug it after the pc
is running, I get the above message on the beloved blue screen. Can anyone
help me??? I'm so lost I have no idea where to start.

Thank you!

In device manager you can roll back to the previous driver under the driver
tab of the devices properties sheet.

or

System Restore

Dopsdad,

Check this link and scroll down to ' General Troubleshooting'. One of the
suggestions is to use the 'Last Known Good Configuration' option.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324103

How to use 'Last Known Good Configuration'

-Start the computer > continually press F8 > Windows Advanced Options menu
should appear
-Using the arrow keys, select 'Last Known Good Configuration' >press Enter

Your problem would seem to be a driver accessing a memory address it
should not.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What drivers
are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for when the error occurs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.
