In the past .wma files created with the sound recorder could simply be
played.
After presumabley some clever updates by Microsoft, .wma files can no longer
be played.
How can I get .wma files to play again?

Try Windows Media Player - they are Windows Media Audio (WMA) files.....at
least that's what I interpret "wma" to stand for.
