Playing video freezes computer

I just had to reformat my computer because Windows Updater corrupted alot of
files, but now I have a new problem. When I try to watch any type of video
on my computer, be it with Windows media player or quicktime, my computer
becomes a slide show. Windows task manager says the video player is using
100% of my processor for some reason. I'm running an Athlon XP 1700 with 1g
of memory. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After you reformatted, did you remember that you needed to reinstall SP2 and
then get the updated drivers for your graphics card from the manfacturer's
website?
