Playing PAL on NTSC PCs?

Hopefully this is the right newsgroup. I don't know if computers in America are
specifically NTSC based but here in Australia we can play any format of video.
However, we've been posting videos of our granddaughter on our website for
relations in the US to look at. But they're telling us that they can't view
them.

The only thing that I can put it down to is that their computers are NTSC or
something, while these videos are in PAL format.

Thing is, I have the same software that they would be using, including Windows
XP, Apple Quicktime (the files are 3GP format), etc..

Could someone advise me how we can get these videos to play for these people? If
indeed, that it's an NTSC/PAL issue.

It's a codec issue.

Tell them to use VLC media player <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/>.

It will play them by default if selected. Under Quicktime Preferences > File
Types > MPEG-MPEG system...., verify that 3GPP is selected.

I don't think it's a codec issue nor does the formats of NTSC and PAL come in to
play once its been converted to 3GPP. But, I've been wrong before.

I agree with Bruno. It's codec issue. I don't think Quicktime plays 3GP
format (I may be wrong).

It is what opens up on my PC when I open 3gp files. Which incidentally are what
our phones' cameras creates (Motorola, Samsung and a Nokia).
Try GOM Player: http://www.gomlab.com/eng/
It does play 3GP format.

If they have problems I'll point them to GOM and that VLC one that others
pointed out.

Thanks, folks.

Although you can view these files with QuickTime correctly, have you had your US
relations verify their QuickTime Preferences settings? See my previous post for
details.

No. The last time that we had this problem they couldn't work it out. Even
though one of them has a husband that is supposedly a "network engineer".

I haven't heard from them since I posted the latest videos last Sunday. If they
do report that they can't view the files I'll have to ask.

My wife will be there in the next week or so so she can check it up using their
computers. We should be able to sort it out then if they can't do it in the
meantime.
