playing mpeg file

When I try to play an mpeg file in PowerPoint 2003, it locks up PowerPoint
and wants to send an error report. Any suggestions?

I think the problem is in that I do not have the proper mpeg codec, but I
don't know where to get one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Where did the MPEG file come from (e.g. what software created it)
