Playing DVD

I have a sony vaio I bought on ebay pentium 4 2.66ghz it
has windows xp pro, and windows xp media, won't play dvds
at all though....I've downloaded media player 9, as well
as a seperate program but no luck. Any body know what to
do. DVD starts to play, but then microsoft error message
pops up saying send report.
