Placement of autofilter drop down menu?

Hi
When I apply autofilter (Excel 2003) it doesn't always place the autofilter
drop down menu in the header row - the placements appears to be random and
doesn't always extend to all columns. Why is this?

Also, sometimes the following message appears when applying autofilter -
"The command could not be completed by using the range specified. Select a
single cell within the range and try the command again" - despite having
selected a single cell within the data range. Does anyone know why this is
happening?

That can depend on a few things. If you have a range selected, the
drop-downs will be in that range. If you have blank columns, the filter
drop-downs will not appear across those.

If you are in a blank column, you will get the error below...

Truly, the easiest thign to do is highlight Row 1 and add your filter that
way. This way, you don't get your error, and all filters will appear in Row 1

Thanks highlighting row 1 is certainly easier!

The error message still come up though even though cursor is placed in a non
balnk column.
