PL2004 Categories and Cross-references

The Topic List page shows the current PL programs. It has a column for
each PL category page. I've shown each program's *home* category in
parentheses and listed some cross-references. Done rather hastily so
please let me know if (where) I goofed. Please suggest additional
cross-references. I hope the page will help also us decide if a program
is on the right category page - or would be better in a different
location.

Having heard no objections I intend to move the Astronomy and Bible
subcategories to Business (and call it Business-Home).

I think the clock subcategories should be moved to the Organizer page -
they overlap with PIM's, reminders, timers etc. Comments?

I'm wondering if the Search and Search & Replace tools shown on the Text
page should be moved to File Utilities - near Archive Viewers and File
Managers?

Business seems like the wrong spot for each of these ...

Maybe ....

Astronomy to Science ....
Bible to Religion ....

What! You want to take religion out of the Business-Home?

What is the appropriate category for multifunction programs such as
WiredPlane WireKeys, Mr. Tech SysTray, (add your favorite here) that
incorporate several (or more) diverse functions?

I think Manager conveys the idea of a multi-purpose app. Desktop Manager
might be a good subcategory to add. One app on this year's PL - PowerPro
- is listed as a Taskbar Utility - which seems to me to be perhaps a
trifle inadequate. description here:

Hidden Menu and RUNit (the other programs in the Taskbar Utility group)
perhaps should in a Program launcher subcategory.

Comments?

I've seen "desktop manager" used several places to refer to 1.
maintaining icon location and multiple/oversizedvirtual desktops, 2.
shell replacements, and 3. PIM/office suite desktops. I would tend to
call the first a "virtual desktop mngr" "desktop switcher" or "desktop
changer". Googling acf for "desktop manager" returns many examples of
1., a couple(?) of 2., and none(?) of 3.

I like including "multipurpose" or "multifunction" in this context,
but "multifunction desktop mngr" and "multipurpose desktop tools"
don't quite do it. Perhaps just "multifunction tools" (or "-purpose")
given that "desktop" is already the context?

You're so right. PowerPro is (at least) multifunction and others are
program launchers. Apl. launchers should crossreference multipurpose
tools in some fashion.

Some of the launchers are so different that limiting that category to
two will be difficult. I just can't figure out how to subdivide it
since functionality overlaps (e.g., button toolbar versus popup menu).

Astronomy is much closer to religion, but that is likely to offend.

Given the relative size of the pages for various topics, "Business &
Home" or similar sounds appropriate. Are there any other subtopics
that would fit there? It could encompass education, science, religion,
weather, .... Combining home and business also avoids assigning
personal finanacial tools.

Yes. Many applications provide several of these features. Just crossreference. ;-)

Maybe you're thinking of Astrology ....

Astronomy is about as hard-core science

So hard-core these days, at least in the popular press, that it is not
far removed from religion. Just a late night joke/lapse. Sorry.
Astronomy could reside with either science applications or hobby apls
were there either. Or just lump them together as miscellaneous.

Susan Bugher

If there's a "hobby" list, it would probably best fit there.

Yup - of course many of the PL programs can be regarded as hobby apps
(in Graphics, Multimedia etc.) but Bible and Astronomy are odd men out.
.. .

I decided Business-Home was more inclusive than Business-Hobby. This
change just gives us a logical place to put the odd ducks.

I think we have some weather related apps on the Internet page -
otherwise, yes - I think using Business-Home encompasses the things you
mentioned. It gives us a catchall spot for programs that don't fit well
in other categories.

I like Desktop Managers and Desktop Customizers for the multipurpose
apps - the first for apps that launch programs etc., the second for the
apps that change the appearance of the desktop.

Doesn't seem to be much interest in this topic at present - I think I'll
just *rearrange the furniture* and then let people review the results.

Suggestions:
Pick a category:
Educational Sub-category: Astronomy
Science: Subcategories(e.g.): Astronomy, Weather and there are more
I like Science. There are more Subs.

Time is a science: Horology, the science of keeping time. Particularly time
sync programs. Clocks and Timers can go onto Desktop.
I also have an excellant freeware Earthquake program - Science

Which I have just done - go to:

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004CategoryIndex.htm

to review the revised categories. I deleted the Shell apps page - added
a new page called PROGRAMMING - changed many categories. The programs
are now shown on the PL2004 pages - to aid in your review of the
proposed categories. Let me know what I got wrong . . .

speaking of which . . .

I discovered a *phantom* program . . . Dclean - which currenntly has the
*exact* same description as Easy Cleaner (see System Utilities page). No
program with that name was nominated but it was reported to have
received 4 votes. I think Dclean was supposed to be HDCleaner. More on
this after I check the actual votes that were cast.

Dclean should be HDCleaner - it was shown as Dclean on the File
Utilities ballot (moved from System Utilites). It did not receive any
votes. I will remove *Dclean* from the PL.

Susan,

You have made so many changes I hardly know where to begin. Wow. A
few almost random thoughts follow.

Email managers should be subdivided between those that are intended
more to manage access to multiple accounts (notifiers?) versus the
rest (some combination of antispam and categorizer?).

I found the mouse utility names and assignments confusing, but that
may be because I don't understand the applications. My understanding
of MyRun is that it is closer to an automation tool or multilauncher
than a mouse utility. It creates an icon for a group of programs. I
can't reach the home page, so my understanding could be off.

I'm not sure what to think about eliminating Shell Tools. For example
where does a shell extension belong which copies all the forms a
"filename" can take now -- URL in several formats, directory with
path, short directory or filename, etc.? Do you have a map that shows
where the programs went? The 2204 alphabetical page isn't available
yet.

Programming is overly broad. I just can't fit tweakers into that
category.

I like having "categories" match the programs more closely even though
I expect that that will cause some problems in nominating and voting.
For example, will the application launchers (shortcuts) be grouped?
Will votes be tallied and then categories assigned?

Thanks for taking on this task.

I could use some help with this . . .

I worked from the Pricelessware descriptions. I agree with your
assessment - it's in Shortcuts: mouse (a shortcut tool that uses the
mouse).
I'm not sure what to think about eliminating Shell Tools. For example
where does a shell extension belong which copies all the forms a
"filename" can take now -- URL in several formats, directory with
path, short directory or filename, etc.?

Sounds like a file utility to me. Browser shells went to Internet,
clipboard utilities mostly went to Desktop - a few to URL subcategory of
Internet page. Shell extensions do many things - IMO it's better to
group programs by task - not by the means used to achieve the task.
Do you have a map that shows
where the programs went?

Most of them are still on the same pages. Exceptions are the shell
utilities (noted above); Bible and Astronomy programs went from Desktop
to Business-Home; some file search programs went from Text to File
Utilities; all time related programs went to the Organizer page; file
cleanup programs are all in System Utilities now (some moved from File
Utilities). I think that's most of the changes.

I tried to group related programs on the same Pricelessware page. Time
sync programs are in Organizers (rather than Internet) because some
clock utilities also have time sync capabilities. Search and Replace
programs moved to File Utilities because file managers and archive
searcher programs overlap into this area. The intent is to have programs
applicable to a particular task grouped as much as possible.

This is still very much a work in progress - the big changes are done
but the subcategories need more work. My knowledge is scanty in many
areas - I read the program descriptions, hope I understood and place the
programs to the best of my ability. I hope others will look at the
preliminary pages now and make suggestions for improvement - I think
this would help when we get into the actual nomination and selection
process.
The 2204 alphabetical page isn't available
yet.

This is *very* true. You may have a bit of a wait. ;)

I did just upload a 2004 page.
Programming is overly broad. I just can't fit tweakers into that
category.

Could be - OTOH Systems Utilities is a BIG page . . .
I like having "categories" match the programs more closely even though

has some info on this part of the process.
