November 9 - November 15, 2005 - Final Selection Discussion

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2006/2006PL-Procedures.php

<q>
Final Selection Procedure

This is the "juried" part of the Pricelessware selection process. The
group as a whole has more expertise than one person.

After the preliminary Pricelessware List selections are made the list is
presented to acf participants for review. The final Pricelessware List
is determined by this discussion.

If you feel that a program of exceptional merit has been overlooked post
a request for inclusion. If you feel that a program is not a good choice
for the Pricelessware List post your objections.
</q>

Let the discussion begin. :)

Susan

</q>

Preliminary Selection procedure

Votes are the primary consideration in the Pricelessware selection
process.. Programs that received the most votes are selected first. A
limited number of programs are selected for a category. A "minimum" vote
count is chosen to avoid "overfilling" categories (more than 3-4
selections). All programs that received this "minimum" number of votes
are selected.

Secondary consideration is given to subcategories. Pricelessware
selections are made in unfilled subcategories to broaden the range of
programs. Only one selection is made in a subcategory. Tie votes will be
discussed in the final selection thread. When several unfilled
subcategories have similar programs one program is selected and the
other subcategories are eliminated.. A second "minimum" is chosen to
minimize the disparity in vote count between selections in the high vote
subcategories and these selections in the less popular subcategories.
Subcategories are eliminated when they do not have any programs that
received the required minimum number of votes.
</q>

This year most subcategories had only a few nominations => overfilling
subcategories was not a problem and most low vote subcategories has only
one nomination. The result? 223 programs were on the ballot, the
preliminary Pricelessware List includes 207 of them.

The "minimum" selected was 10 votes for automatic inclusion on PL2006.
196 programs received 10 or more votes. 11 additional programs (7-9
votes) were selected in "low vote" subcategories. (No subcategories were
eliminated.)

It's not clear from the quoted sections how you want the discussion
structured in terms of threads so I've hung my reply off Susans original
post. If this is not correct, please let me know (and accept my apologies).
Personally, I have no problems with any of the items as voted by the group -
with possibly one exception that may or may not be relevant.

Is the dbPowerAmp app also a media player, or is that a seperate item with a
similar name or from the same company? If so, I remember installing it once
and having it mess up all my music file-type associations without asking
permission, which disinclined me drastically against the software. This may
have been corrected by software updates since, or it might not even be the
same application - in which case, feel free to point this out, and then
disregard these comments! (Actually, my presumption is that any program that
did this would not get listed as PW in the first place, which this app has
in the past - so I'm expecting this complaint to be quickly shown as
irrellevant).

I think it is a different app as I've never found a media player
included with dbPowerAmp. I also agree that any programme that changed
file associations without asking should not be included in the list -
very naughty thing for a programme to do to me and it would be
immediately uninstalled ;)

M

Mike Bourke

From memory, it wasn't just that it changed them without asking - it also
removed the file type associations completely when you uninstalled it. And
it was definitly a dbPowerAmp app - it had a really nice interface, but was
far too agressive about it's file associations.

Yep its a seperate app. I have always downloaded the converter (until
10.2) but never touched the media player. I don't recall any such
problems with the converter.

Hi Dud,

That's good to know. Do you want the subcategory and/or the description
changed or is this just an FYI?

Just an FYI. <more information than is required follows ;-o> I'm pretty
anal about my music files ;-) Only the hands of EAC will do for ripping
and I only archive in flac/ape/"insert favorite lossless codec here" I do
use Foobar2000 to convert from lossless to "alt preset
standard/extreme/insane" for use with portable Mp3 player, tag/retag
downloaded files and for listening. Burning is handled by EAC via cue
sheet.

Should we not be consistent? If it is similiar to the way IrfanView does

I dunno if it's the same - the concern with IrfanView turned out to be
Spyware rather that Adware. . . BeAr's main analysis of IrfanView is in
this post:

Subject: Re: [PL] PL2006 Ware Issues

I believe this may be somewhat different. I wasn't having any luck
earlier getting to the DAEMON tools site - evidently they're overloaded
ATM. Just now managed to view this page:

http://www2.daemon-tools.cc/notes.html

<q>
Another important change is the integration of ADWARE. Yes, we need that
revenues. However, we decided to let YOU choose to run it with ADWARE
and support us - or simple turn it OFF in installation-process and run
it same way as former versions - without ADWARE. By default, it is
turned ON - to not install that ADWARE, please UNCHECK at installation
"DAEMON TOOLS SEARCHBAR" (or you can remove it anytime later when you
wish via "Control Panel"-> "Add/Remove programs")

We leave that decision to you, so please don't blame us that we did it
that way. It was a compromise to continue the free support - we would
much appreciate it if you install that ADWARE-stuff. We set- up a
special forum so please post in THAT forum only about questions,
concerns or anything else that is related to that ADWARE. The forum's
name is "DAEMON Tools Searchbar".
</q>

I don't know exactly what's being installed - whatever it is it's
opt-out rather than opt-in. . . Anyway, would very much appreciate
feedback from the DAEMON Tools fans.

Per posts in the forum it looks like the Adware is from WhenU.

(There's a current ACF thread about that company: Overview of WhenU's
Software, Practices and Policies)

Interesting reading on this topic can be found here:

www.benedelman.org/spyware/whenu-privacy

Be sure to follow the 'Related Projects' links, too. The information
is not entirely up-to-date. (WhenU is busy at the moment trying to
convince people how much they've changed, lately.) But I'm rather
unconvinced that such a company will do more for user privacy than it
is forced to...

For my money, it depends on whether or not they explain the option not to
install the adware in the install procedure. However, I am concerned that
adware is activated by default.

All the people that use this app must be on vacation. I had hoped that
by now someone would have posted enough information about the
installation and behavior of the Adware that's bundled with the app so
we could have a semi-intelligent ;) discussion.

IMO we should have a discussion first and then proceed to a vote if that
seems indicated. Today WAS supposed to be the day the final PL was
posted. I'm going to defer that till we get this sorted out.
