PIXMA ip3000 impressions

Got my new PIXMA ip3000 this past weekend ($79.99 from Amazon). Its
replacing my i850 that was in need of a new printhead which would have
cost $52 by itself.

I don't print a lot of photos - so I didn't think the extra $ for the
ip4000 which gets you the photo black was needed. My i850 was only a
four color printer. I just needed a general purpose color printer. I
like Canon because the individual ink tanks - the only way to go!

Mechanically from what I could tell comparing the insides of the i850
and ip3000 with the covers open, they appear very similar. The area
with the optical encoder on the left side is different, but there
appears to be a very similar amount of sheet metal on the inside.

The main enclosure feels pretty solid, about the same footprint as my
i850. The front door doesn't always release/open correctly - sometimes
it catches a bit and I need to pull it down with my fingernail, and
since it also functions as a pullout paper tray its a bit flimsy feeling
because of the layers of plastic its made up of. Its not the worst,
could be better.

Photos prints are as good as my old i850 - which were great!

The duplex feature is cool - it really works! Interesting how it does
it too - it will print the first side, top of the page coming out first,
then suck it back in and flip it and the sheet almost comes all the way
back out again, but it starts printing, pulling it back into the
printer, then spitting it out when its finish - interesting to watch....

The extra paper tray is nice - I put my 4x6 photo paper in it - no more
switching.

I was hoping Best Buy would have the ip4000 on display, but they only
had them in boxes, I wanted to take a look inside and see if I could
spot any differences other than the 5 color printhead.

So I'll give printer a thumbs up.

Just got one of these myself, to replace my dying S750. All I can say is
WOW, this is a great value even at full retail. 2 paper feeds with smart
paper selection, duplexing and excellent photo quality all with the same
great and cheap ink we love. Fast and oh-so-silent too.

Yep.....I love mine too....but I'd love it even more if it included the tray
for CD / DVD printing that comes
with just about every other ip3000 on the planet ...except those sold in Nth
America!!
