Pivot table 'Too Many Row or Column Items...'

Matt Cromer

I am getting the message regarding too many row or column items. Drag at
least one row or column field off The PivotTable report...

This is a pivot table that I update each week, and this week the error
appeared. I suspect it has less to do with how many columns/rows I have
selected, and more to do with how many combinations are being generated. I
would prefer not to change the pivot table, is there any way around this? I
am using Office Excel 2003 SP3.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Matt

If you are attempting to change multiple fields at once, right-click on the
pivot table and got to Pivot Table Wizard, then click on Layout. this will
allow you to change everything at once, then click Finish for the final
product.

If you have any data grouped, ensure all fields still have this data type,
otherwise, youll get ungrouped.

I am not trying to modify the pivot table, only refresh it. The datasource
is an Access query. When I refreshed it this week, I got the error. I have
determined there was a problem with the number of group by's it was doing in
the query, as when I wrote an iif statement to clean up some data in a
particular field...it refreshes fine again.

I feel like I made the query get below some number of unique combinations or
someting, because I did not actually remove any fields to get it to refresh.

Pivot tables don't like to do group by with blanks, so it's possible that was
related as well.

Hard to tell for sure based on the below.

Did your data list get shorter with your group bys?

It did get shorter, and it very well could be the group bys that were hosing
me.

Thanks Sean!
