pivot table grouping

I am trying to do a grouping in my pivot table and a error message comes
back that I cannot group the data. The data is a date field and I am trying
to group as a month or quarter. I think the cell format may have something
to do with the problem but I have formated it to a date field and I still
have the problem. Can anyone help on this topic.

If you have blank cells in that range--or any text in that range, you'll have
this problem.

First off make sure that the source data is truely dates (Not text. You can
do that by changing the format of the cell to be sure that the displayed
value in the cell matches the format you selected). Once you are sure that
you have dates tehn you need to go to your pivot table and select Refresh
Data twice (it is an odd little quirk that you need to do it twice). Make
sure that you do it twice. Both thimes it should indicate that the pivot
table changed. Now you should be able to group.
