Pirate copy of XP

Well!..
3 yrs ago I bought a computer from a friend of my son's. I paid $500.00 for
this computer & that is a lot of money for me.

Not being savvy about this stuff, I merrily went along enjoying my new
puter & learning some stuff along the way..like the fact that I cannot get
SP2 from Microsoft.

I have explored Microsoft's Update site & have learned that it will cost me
$199.00 for a legit copy of XP.

I just can't afford this...but at the same time I am puzzled ?? I am getting
certain updates on a regular basis (automatically) but cannot get SP2???

I don't understand!

in the meantime I am feverishly checking my system on a daily basis with
SpySweeper (purchased), AdAware, SpyBot S&D, Spyware Blaster, WinPatrol, Zone
Alarm, Rogers Yahoo Online Protection..

Any feedback for this li'l ol' lady??

Much appreciated...

How do you know it's "illegal"? SP2 will install just fine on legal and
illegal copies of XP. Call MS and get SP2 on CD. Clean up your computer
and then install it.

complicated..too much info for me

Can anyone simplify it for me?? How do I prepare my PC for installation?
What do I really need to do to install this?

All you have to do is to click on the SP2 file you download and it will
install itself.

As far as preparing your PC for installation, nothing special. As in all
serious upgrades such as service packs, it's good to backup first. But,
alas, many many don't do that and never suffer any consequences. How lucky
do you feel? LOL. The main thing is to make sure your PC is in good health
overall before commencing the upgrade of SP2. You might want to run "chkdsk
/f" from the command prompt to make sure the file system is in good repair
before running SP2. You can do that by...

1) Start | Run | Type 'cmd' (sans quotes) in to the window and hit [enter].
2) Type 'C:' (sans quotes) and hit [enter]
3) Type 'chkdsk /f' (sans quotes) and hit [enter]
4) When prompted that you cannot run chkdsk with the f parameter on a live
disk and do you want it to run on the next boot, answer 'Y' (sans quote) and
hit [enter]
5) Close the command prompt window by clicking on the Red X in the top right
corner.
6) Start | Shutdown | Set to "restart" | Click OK

On this next boot it will auto-run 'chkdsk /f' (means check the disk and
fix) and then it will reboot itself when done. Now you are ready to double
click on SP2 and install SP2.

I would just keep quiet about this and continue enjoying XP at
somebody's expense.

SP2 is still free but since you have learned a lot from illegal copy I
can send it to you on a CD for $25!!

Take it or leave it!

You don't need any preparations. You have taken all reasonable care so
far so just click on EXE file and let it do the dirty work.

XP w/SP2 is $89 at most retail outlets.

Are you sure that he will be able to install SP2 on a pirated copy ? He
can't with SP1.
