What you'd think about a contest, like that for the logo, this time for the
pricelesswarehome site favicon?

Someone (sorry I can't remember who) recently wrote about it, and today it
came to my mind again, visiting the site.

I wish we had a favicon, and I'm sure the artists here can come out with
something really good. :-)

The floppy disk works.

Clueless amateur webmaster reporting in. . . I know nothing about
favicons, had to stop and figure out what that had to do with the PWH
site. I think I'm more or less up to speed now. . . ;)

It sounds like a good idea to me. We'll need to have a time frame for
submittals and someone to count the votes. Would you like to volunteer
to organize the contest? (Burnr or I could upload the icons as they're
submitted.)

The graphic needed is quite small and may be difficult to tell what looks
good by simply displaying them on a blank web page, like we did with the
logos. We could display each submittal on a web page with each one numbered
and also display each favicon as intended for a couple days each so people
can see what they look like in the browser url field. Then perform the
vote. Just a suggestion.

Sounds like a good suggestion. My suggestion - since graphics is your
department I'll just sit on the sidelines (till you tell me I need to do
something). Okay?

As some of you know; I'm no artist, but I took a shot at this
anyway... :-) , hey: It's just a 16x16 icon file, right?

To show it in real life I uses it temporarily on my site:

Oh Susan, I'm not good at organizing anything unfortunately.
I couldn't even know where to start.
Instead of sitting on the sidelines, since you are already a great
organizer, why not you? Please.... :-)

<VBG> I asked if you'd like to *volunteer*. I take it the answer is no,
no, a thousand times no. ;)

As for me, I belong on the sidelines - graphics are Burnr's bailiwick.
I'm just hoping he has some free time available. If not we'll figure out
another way to do it.

Just a thought, and it might sound a bit "USA-centric", but how about
the "No" symbol (red circle and slash) over a dollar sign? Should be
easy to recognize even 16X16. (Red circle and slash, green dollar
sign?)

Or would that be "no money"?

Yes, Susan-B that is your Ability
ie "Organize Thoughts into Actions"

Quit being apologatic
"I belong on the sidelines"

and Whip them into Action

One thing to consider, a 'favicon' will not be seen by netscape (firefox
either?)..only by IE for instance the one Vegard just put up does not show
up with ns7.1.
it will have to be named something other than favicon...can be the same
file, same root directory, just two versions.

<end two cents>

Favicons *are* seen by Firefox.

yep a classic example of open mouth-insert-foot.
I mispoke as to the need to rename the icon, it can be called 'favicon' but
the link must but different.
For netscape it is:
link REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="/favicon.ico"
and for IE (I think) you just need to have the icon (named favicon.ico) in
the root directory.
now...if I have once again mispoke I will just lurk from now on...

Yep the FireFox browser
by default caches the
icons in your BookMark
folder so it becomes
Bloated beyond belief

Please! Not red and green. Ten percent of the male population is
colourblind and those two colours are the most affected. In fact the
use of Red is a bad choice in most circumstances IMHO.

BTW: I did'nt do it "properly" - I did not include it my index.html
file. Just quick and dirty uploaded favicon.ico to the root...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favicon
The original means of defining a favicon was by placing a file called favicon.ico in the root directory of a webserver. This would then automatically be used in Internet Explorer's favorites (bookmarks) display.
Later, however, a more flexible system was created, using HTML to indicate the location of an icon for any given page. This is achieved by adding two link elements in the <head> section of the document as detailed below. In this way, any appropriately sized (16×16 pixels or larger) image can be used, and although many still use the .ico format, other browsers now also support the GIF and PNG image formats.
Most modern browsers implement both methods. Because of this, web servers receive many requests for the file "favicon.ico" even if it doesn't exist.

It is shown in my Firfox 1.5

Now I have done it "right" (I think):
<link rel="icon" href="http://vegard2.no/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://vegard2.no/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

Contest over.
Looks like a winner.

In case anyone tries it:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="blah.png" type="x-image/png" />
doesn't play well with others. (Internet Explorer, that is, only dines on
ico files)

I think your icon is perfect.
