Ping and internet works, file sharing does not. D-Link Wireless Network.

Setup:
-WinXP Home connected to a DI-614+ DLink wireless router.
-Two Win98SE machines connected wirelessly to above router. (One is a
laptop, the other a desktop).

Problem:
The file and print sharing does not work across the network, nor can I
get Norton live updates. The internet works flawlessly across the
wireless network (DSL modem connected to the router) but file sharing
does not. I am currently using TCP/IP for file and print sharing.

Things I have tried:
-All firewalls are disabled (especially the XP firewall).
-Computers are assigned static IP address by the DHCP server on the
router. (192.168.0.103 XP, 192.168.0.101 laptop 98, 192.168.0.102
desktop 98).
-Subnets are identical (255.255.255.0).
-The router's IP address checks out and is used for DHCP and DNS (I
think). (192.168.0.1)
-Workgroup names are identical.
-TCP/IP is installed and working on all computers.
-Ping _does_ work to all computers, and all computers show up in
network connections on the XP machine, but a connection cannot be
established.
-I have read through almost every article on
www.practicallynetworked.com.
-I have also looked extensively through the google groups and the
website www.homenethelp.com, all to no avail.
-I called D-Link tech support. (ha!)

One interesting note: E-mail works through all computers except the XP
one (the main PC).

This issue has been around since December, and I really need to get
this network working. Ping works, the internet works, so why doesn't
file sharing work!?

(By the way, please don't suggest taking everything back and
exchanging for a LinkSys card or whatever until all alternatives have
been sought; this is my setup and I want to get it working. It seems
like the cards should work and are not malfunctioning. But if they
are, I will certainly note the advice).

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

On my dlink-router i cannot disable the firewall. i have to tell the
router what ports (TCP/UDP) and IP's to allow and put thru. This was
necessary in the advanced section for applications, virtual servers,
and firewall.

I have two laptops and a pc connected running a software-firewall and
everything works fine, but i do not use windows xp; all machines run
with win2k.

I hope this helps a bit.

Had the same problem, went thru all the forums and websites. I am using XP so I don't know if this will work for you. What seemed to fix my problem was using the Map Network drive function. After setting that up I ran Add Network Place. When I did this I couldn't browse for my networked computer name, I had to type it in the box (like \\compname\sharedfilename)

Hope this helps some, took me a week to figure this thing out!
