ping -a resolution

When I issue the command "ping -a xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx", how
does is the hostname resolved? DNS, WINS, NetBios, all of
the above? I have a site where some names are resolved
and others are not.
 
I don't know this to be a fact, but no one else is replying, so I'll post my
theory.

HOSTS, LMHOSTS, DNS, WINS in that order.

You could test it if you really want to know by modifying entries in your
HOSTS and LMHOSTS files, then modify DNS and WINS also.
