pictures display as gobbledegook code and numbers??

For some strange reason, every time I try to open pictures in Word 2003, they
display instead as random numbers & symbols. It comes up with the message
select the coding that makes your document readable. This only started
happening recently for no apparent reason.

If you are using the File->Open command, than that won't work,
and never has. Use the Insert->Picture->FromFile command instead.
