Picture style problems

Hi,

When working with pictures, changing the way the picture is being shown
using the pictures styles function, in Word 2007 B2TR and i save the file in
any version other than the .dotx i can no longer use the picutre styles
tools. This didnt happen before the b2tr was released. what can i do to fix
it, if anything? IF i save the file as .dotx (without pre 2007 compatibility)
it works still.

Hi Matt,

For compatability between versions, if you save in .doc (legacy) version of MS Word you get the 'legacy' tools and dialogs where the
new features aren't supported in older versions for editing.

In the case of graphics the Picture Tools ribbon is different depending on your document type.

If you have the document open and use Office=>Button=>Convert you'll get the 2007 ribbon version back. Apply the styles you want
then save as a .doc file and the style will be 'set' as part of the graphic.

why when i save files in ppt or xls for excel and powerpoint and 2003 and
prior i can still use the picture styles but not when i save in doc. that
doesnt make sense.

is there anyway to cirucmvent this problem

Hi Matt,

The basic method to 'circumvent' this in Word 2007 is to work on the document when it's in a 2007 file format mode (this includes
starting a new document that you haven't yet saved the first time).

Documents that are in 'Word 2003' format show 'compatability mode' in the name of the document at the top of the screen (unless your
Quick Access Toolbar is full and hides the name) and when you hover over the document in the Windows task bar. Also when Word 2007
features are off pictures show small blue circles for sizing handles rather than the large ice blue sizing handles when the features
are on.
A basic assumption is that if you're using the legacy file formats it could be for the purpose of sharing/collaborating with people
who have older versions of Word. If you're only sharing with folks when a document is finished (i.e. you don't plan on recipients
editing a Word document) then you can work in Word 2007 file formats until you want to send the legacy file. Note that MS is making
available a converter set for folks with Word viewers and Word 2000 and up to be able to open Word 2007 formatted files and then the
'conversion' to finished graphic (similar to if you pasted a graphic into a Word document) happens on file opening. Saving from your
side in compatability format allows you to see what they will (hopefully) see as your finished document.

In Word 2007 users can apply 3D effects to graphics (inserted photos, etc). This is what the picture styles are. In Word 2003 you
can apply similar effects to shapes, but not to graphics using the internal tools. In Word 2007 if you work with a Drawing Canvas
(Insert=>Shape=>New Drawing) you will get the legacy tools to work with in both .docx and .doc file formats.

Powerpoint and Excel implemented more of the new graphics features (MS's Escher v2 engine) than Word did and each app's team chose
the methods for helping with collaboration related issues. Word has more risk of documents appearing differently for folks on
different versions of Word than those in Excel and Powerpoint. In Excel, if you work in XLS format you cannot, for example use the
larger spreadsheet sizes (row and column limits).

so basically the reason that i cant edit the photos in compatablility mode is
that it causes compatability issues with different version, but in excel and
powrepoint the effects of on pictures will not have a great deal of change.
Is it possible to let developers still allow you to use the picture options
in word 2007 in compatability mode, lets say as an option?
