Phone number format

can any tell me the telephone number format so that I can call using my
mobile phone (irrespective of where I am) after I sync with outlook with my
smartphone (WinMobile2003-Outlook 2002).
i.e. sometimes I need the country area code but if I am local I don't,

?When to use spaces when entering the number
?When to use the plus +sign
?Should I use a dash - within the number to make reading the number easier
etc?
?When should I use brackets

thanks

The masking of phone numbers in Outlook is hard coded and cannot be
configured by the user. The format will not matter as long as your operating
system's dialing rules are set correctly.

Thanks Russ,

I realise that the format is hard coded into Outlook, however what I'm
asking is what is the correct format that I am supposed to enter into the
contact.
For instance, if i have just a local number ie no country or area code, do
spaces or dashes matter? - as i see a difference when they are displayed in
outlook regarding the mask etc.

So my question is: What is the format that I should enter phone numbers when
i create a new contact e.g.: for a Australian number (country code 61, area
code 2 (Sydney) phone number 8 digits)
+61 2 9432 3299 or
61294323299 or
+612 9432 3299 or
+612 9432-3299 or
(+612) 94323299 etc etc

as they all appear differently in outlook

Also this is similar for mobile numbers: when in Australia you need to dial
for instance
0408212044
whilst when outside the country you need to dial
+61408212044 (ie without the zero but the plus sign has to be there) how
are these numbers supposed to be entered to work irrespective of whether I'm
in Australia or outside. This is of relevance as I sync to Outlook on a
Smartphone (Windows Mobile 2003 OS). I don't really care how they are
displayed in outlook or what mask it uses, i just want the numbers to work
everywhere in the world. So what format do i need?

Thank you.

The format that will work the best is international format (sometimes called
canonical format).
Information on canonical format for phone numbers can be found here:
