I have been trying to place a phone dialer icon on my desktop in Windows
XP like I have done in Win 98 and Win 2000. So far I haven't found it. I
can initiate it from Microsoft Office, but that is the only way I can open
it. Any suggestions?

Go to Start > Run and type: DIALER.EXE , and hit enter.

Phone Dialer Is Not Available in the Communications Menu

Jim,
If you right click your start button, click search, then
type in dialer.exe in the "All or part of the file name:"
field and select your hard drive (usually designated C:)
in the "Look in" field. Next, click "More advanced
options" and make sure that "Search System folders" is
checked. Then click "Search". When you see the correct
file come up in the results window, RIGHT click it and
select "Create Shortcut" from the popup menu. You should
receive a popup that says Windows cannot create the
shortcut here, would you like it placed on your desktop.
Since this is where you indicate you'd like it, just click
yes or ok.

This will give you the shortcut to your desktop that you
asked about.

Please post back if you have any difficulties or email me
at (e-mail address removed).

Many thanks to both suggestion above. They both worked. I tried
Carey's method first and it worked fine and Melissa's way was just a little
less work. I am glad to get the phone dialer back on the desktop. Maybe MS
had an oversight on this one or they have some other plan to get us to use
the dialer somewhere else.
