A dialog box keeps popping up saying lightn~1.SCR has encountered a problem
and
needs to close. what is this and how do you get rid of it?
I am not running a screen saver

When does this message pop up and what system changes (installation/s)
have been made prior to this encounter?

Any screen saver may be started by any program at any time, even when
there is no screen saver selected in the corresponding Windows dialog.
Search your drive/s for the file "lightn*.scr" and check its location
and file properties in order to find out its origin. Note that some
malware comes as *.scr files - check your malware status as well.
