I have four partitions. one for xp, the rest for applications relavent to the
user accounts. I have four user accounts. The idea was only thing relavent to
xp would be on the xp partition. Something Ive realised though is that if user
1 saves a document, it will be saved in there document folder (which is what I
want) but this folder in on the xp partion (C). Is there a way of using xp's
document folders (my documents, my pictures etc,) but having these on another
partition?

The answer to you question is yes!

Go into each users account, right-click their "my documents" folder and
select properties. Under the target tab you should see "target folder
location" type the location you want for their my documents folder and click
move. Done!

p.s. i know there is probably a more administrative way to do this (through
group policies) do a search for "special folders" in the help and support
center. I have no experience of this since the way i described was easiest
for me to implement.

Yes, get TweakUI for XP PowerToys. It makes moving
"special folders" easy.

You can move MY Documents, email store folders etc to a
partition of your choice.

I have C: for system (skipped D: for now) E: for personal
files, with folders for each user.
If I have to reinstall Windows, data files (and my
downloaded programs) are safe on E:

Hi Robert,

Sure. Just right-click the "My Doc's" folder, select properties. There is an
option to "move" is to another location - just choose the target partition
for each user.

Each user has his own folders in Documents and settings\<his name\

You can, when logged in as that user, open that folder, and another on a
target drive (eg I gather you have individual one for each user) and
*right* drag folders like My Documents across from the one to the other,
taking Move here. This will update registry pointers, so when he does a
'Save as' it will be pointed to the moved folder. I'd confine it to the
'My' ones plus Favorites, Cookies and Desktop (and CD burning if he
uses that). Other folders have sub-olders and there is liable to be
confusion if you do not get references right.

You can also move their Temporary Internet Files folder, but do that
from Control Panel - Internet Options - click Settings and Move folder,
doing it again from each logon

If you have two users sharing a partition, then make an individual
folder there for each of them, and drag into the relevant folder.
