Personal Folders File

I just got a new pc and moved my outlook.pst file from my old pc to the new
one. I use Outlook 2003 and have all of the service packs installed. I run
Windows XP Pro SP2 with a Pentium Dual Core processor.

When I started outlook on the new pc, in the navigation window on the ledt
side under All Mail Folders, I am getting two personal folders in my list.
I checked the help for outlook and it says that if you have two instances of
personal folders, you should right click one of them and select Close
Personal Folders (making sure it is not the one that new mail is being
delivered to).

The problem is this option is grayed out on both instances of personal
folders. In fact they are the exact same personal folders and contain all
the same content.

Also, if I go to Tools->Email Accounts->View/Change existing email accounts,
there is a box that says
Deliver new e-mail to the following location. When I drop down on this box
there are also 2 instances of the personal folders in there.

So basically, I want to get rid of the two instances and just have it
reflect the one personal folders file that should be there. The two
instances of personal folders look exactly the same to me in every way.
Does anyone know how I can get rid of one of them?

I would be happy to add any more information that someone thinks would be
relevant.

How did you transfer the file? My guess is that you copied the file over the
original? This will corrupt your mail profile and you'll have to recreate
it. For detailed steps on how to recreate it and how to properly connect an
"old" pst-file see;

Actually, I started outlook on the new computer and it created an
outlook.pst file that was empty. I then renamed that one, and dropped my
outlook.pst file from my other computer in the directory.

When I opened it, it seemed to have all of my data in there (contacts,
tasks, calendar and email). It is just this annoyance that there are two
instances of personal folders in the folder window.

I didn't think I needed to create a new profile since I only need one and
just want to use the default profile.

So any more hints as to how to remove that second instance of personal
folders?

Thanks,
Brian

He already told you the answer. Migrating a PST file that way corrupts your
profile.
You'll have to create a new one or live with the duplicate.

Actually, just to address this post, he said that I overwrote the pst file
which is not accurate. I renamed it and moved a new one in. So to clarify
(and in my dealings with microsoft support you are always told what to do
EXACTLY) I did not overwrite the pst file as he assumed in his post.

Additionally, I have moved my outlook file that way for about 4 or 5 years
now and never corrupted it. In fact I used to have scripts that copied the
file between my desktop and laptop and never had a problem with it. I am
basically doing the same thing I had always done, however, with a new
result.

That was the reason for my follow up question. Sorry it seemed to bother
you.

It's not the file that was corrupted, it was the profile. This has never
been the correct or supported method to migrate PST files. You've only
gotten away with it before because versions prior to Outlook 2003 were more
tolerant.
The only supported way to change your default PST file is to use the Data
File Management utility within the profile as documented in the Help Files:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx
Never copy a PST file into the default directory, however, because you may
end up overwriting another PST file (since Outlook always creates a default
PST file that will very likely have the same name as the one you're
copying).
