I know this has been discussed recently but... I have use ZoneAlarm for
many years and have found it to work very well. The only "problem" I
have with it, is that it uses a lot of memory (vsmon.exe). I uninstalled
it and ran Outpost for a few minutes. I must have had it configured
wrongly, because my browser had difficulty opening a webpage. I
temporarily disabled Outpost, and the browser worked fine. I enabled
Outpost and the browser worked, but only because I already had it open
and functioning.

Is there a good free "lightweight" firewall title? I've heard of Sygate,
but will it "hog" resources as ZoneAlarm did? Also, does anyone have it
and be able to post it to a binaries group or email it to me? Remove
Zoom Zoom from the address. Thanks for any help.

I am using the last freeware version of Sygate and since it has been
bought out by Symantec I have been looking at others also. I had the
same experience you had with Outpost and uninstalled it immediately
also.

I was going to write in with the same question about an alternative to
ZA. What is the impact of Sygate's sale in terms of ongoing virus updates?

Sygate is a firewall, not an anti-virus program.

Could you please post Sygate to a binaries group for me? Thanks.

Because it's always best to get your firewall from a stranger via
a binary group on Usenet.

Maybe not best, but I'm very careful. Hell, I've been sent viruses by
friends. Makes no difference who sends you what, if you don't take
precautions. Thanks for the help.

I could help. I mean, I could do a Google and find out where to
download firewalls, which is what I do when I want them myself.

It's just that it's a poor practice to use software that is sent
through Usenet by someone you probably have never met. This is
particularly true with regard to security software. If you want
any software to be trojan free, it is your firewall software. The
firewall is your most vital defense. It's more important than your
antivirus software.

You're right... I was just being lazy. Resources. If ya got 'em... use
'em. Most people, especially on Usenet, are usually quite eager to help
out others with the same interests. I rely on the kindness of strangers,
for if "we" don't, we just become a bunch of shut-ins, punching
keyboards into submission, all the while growing increasingly wary of
one another.

Right again... BUT!... as I said before... I am very careful. I scan
each downloaded file with at least 3 different software titles. Thanks
again, Al... and do yourself a favor... don't "join" a binaries group...
I wouldn't want you going all Matchstick Man on me. Shut that door three
times now. Enjoy Rockwell, but make sure you scan!

We are now working on reducing the mem usage. Next version will be very
comparable if not better than sygate.

thanks

Good to hear that. How about the AV too? I tried installing both the
firewall and the AV, and here, on my Win2k system after a fresh reboot,
ram used by both combined was 120mb! I think the AV really needs some
work in that department. But it is version 1 I realize...

Just installed the firewall and it looks like a keeper although when I
tried installing their anti virus I had a hell of a time. Initial scan
seemed to get stuck on various folders and appeared to be in a loop.
Reverted back to AVG which runs like a top.

Yes, I think it's still very early in development for the AV. I have read
some reactions to it in various forums, most saying that it didn't detect
quite a lot of sample viruses compared to the other well established AVs,
which isn't surprising I guess. I will pass on the AV for now..

You can send few files to comodo research lab for which it takes more
time to scan or stucks. Submit option: Main Window-> Quarantine Page->
Submit Suspected Files-> Submit FIles..
You can mention the stuck problem in description.

in a true Comodo Fashion, we will keep improving and improving ;-)
We already started the work on the next version of the AV which will be
much better the current one and leaner in mem usage :)

Keep supporting us by telling us how we can improve pls.

thanks
