Persistent SYSTEM ERROR Prompts

I keep getting these annoying SYSTEM ERROR prompts telling me that my
registry is corrupt then they promote various websites advertising registry
cleaners (e.g. www.registryfixerpro.com, regcleanerxp.com).

I used to get these prompts In the past, whereupon I performed a system
restore and was able to revert to a point prior to whatever adware was added.
However, I recently reinstalled Windows and no longer have any restore
points. Also, I've used the latest virus and spyware scans but they don't
seem to find the source of these prompts.

My question is: has anyone had this same issue and how do I get rid of these
damn prompts?

I had them annoying pop-ups a couple of weeks ago. It was after i tried to
delete a value from the registry. I performed a system restore back a couple
of days and they were gone. I used Norton Internet security, Spybot, AVG
Free, Windows One livecare and none of them could detect it.

I googled for it. Most of the links are in French. It seems to be a
problem with unscrupulous companies using Windows Messenger to torture
you until you give them money to fix a non-problem:

The answer seems to be to disable Windows Messenger.

The messenger service is not the problem. The real problem is the fact that you are not running
a firewall, or if you are, you haven't blocked ports 137-139.

Disabling the messenger service will stop the popups, but if you have file and print sharing
bound to your external TCP/IP connection, then you could also potentially be sharing your
entire hard disk with the world since netBIOS uses ports 137-139.

If you use the windows firewall go to advanced > exeptions tab, see if
there is a reference to the popup if so, uncheck it.

Actually, I am running a firewall and it was and is never detected. There
was a period of, while switching services, that I was without a firewall, so
my computer may have been infected at that point. Thanks for the comment,
however, that doesn't tell me how to fix it.

Does anyone actually have a fix for this other than disabling the messenger
service?
